With the popularity of electric vehicles increasing, more questions are arising about them. Most of these questions are related to charging. Two types of EVs use rechargeable battery packs. First is a battery-electric vehicle, or BEV. These are all-electric vehicles, completely void of a gas-powered engine. The second is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle or PHEV. A PHEV uses a seamless integration of gas and electric power to increase range and fuel efficiency. An example of a PHEV would be the Jeep 4xe models; Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe. Both BEVs and PHEVs are recharged by external power sources. Please continue reading below to learn more about EV charging!
What Types of EV Chargers Are Available?
Whether you’re interested in purchasing a new Jeep PHEV in the near future or you’ve just purchased your first one, you probably have questions about charging it. This is understandable, as the primary difference between a PHEV and a gas-powered car is the rechargeable battery. However, charging your Jeep 4xe is just as easy as filling the tank but can be done right at home! The purchase of a new Jeep 4xe includes a Level 1 EV charger. A Level 1 EV charger is plugged into a traditional 120-volt home outlet and provides the 4xe battery with a full charge in about 14 hours. With a Level 1 charger, it’s recommended to plug in your vehicle overnight. The recommended charging method, however, is the available Level 2 charger. This cuts the 4xe’s charging time down to just two hours. This professionally-installed charger is hardwired into your home’s electrical system, harnessing more energy. The Mopar Level 2 charger is provided by QMerit and links to your home’s WiFi router to provide multiple functions. These include monitoring your vehicle’s charging, controlling the charging, and alerting you when the cost of electricity is at its lowest with a phone notification. This allows you to charge your vehicle at an optimal time to save on energy.
Prepare Your Charging Station
Whether you’re using a Level 1 or Level 2 charger, you should be sure to make a charging station for your vehicle. To do this, make sure to clean out an area for your charging station with enough room for your vehicle, of course. If your Jeep 4xe will be in a garage, make sure to create a space for the charger and a clear path to your vehicle. Next, you should get an assessment of your home’s current energy consumption. You can do this by consulting the utility meter on your home’s power panel. Modern homes typically have a 100-amp power panel. However, this rating for your home should be printed on your circuit breaker. Checking your home’s energy usage is important because using too much energy can overload your home’s electrical system. If you’re unsure of your home’s usage or have any other concerns, you should get assistance from an electrician.
What is the Jeep 4xe Lineup?
Jeep introduced the 4xe plug-in hybrid system in 2021 under the hood of the Wrangler. All PHEVs use at least one electric motor powered by a rechargeable battery pack and an internal combustion engine. For the Wrangler, this setup is one electric motor replacing the alternator for seamless stop-start function and optimal brake regeneration, another electric motor taking the place of the transmission’s torque converter, a 400-volt lithium-ion battery pack, and a two-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine. The 4xe system joined the Grand Cherokee engine lineup in 2022. Both the Grand Cherokee 4xe and Wrangler 4xe offer 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. The Grand Cherokee 4xe achieves the equivalent of 56 MPG, while the Wrangler 4xe gets the equivalent of 49 MPG. Additionally, the Grand Cherokee 4xe offers a 25-mile electric driving range and 470 miles total. Wrangler offers 21 miles of all-electric driving and a 370-mile total driving range. By 2025, Jeep aims to have the 4xe system available for the whole lineup. Meanwhile, 2025 is also the year that Jeep aims to bring their first-ever BEV, the Recon, into production.
