Knowing the benefits of owning an EV will undeniably help make the switch that much easier. So please continue reading below to learn a few benefits that EV owners experience and why you should consider making the switch!

Save on Fuel and Maintenance

Owning a form of an electric vehicle, whether a plug-in hybrid or all-electric, will help you save on fuel by reducing the frequency of filling up or completely eliminating fuel altogether. In fact, owners of an all-electric vehicle stand to save an average of $700 per month on refueling their vehicle, or in this case, recharging. In addition to not using as much fuel, electricity is also cheaper than fuel. One gallon of gasoline is equivalent to 33.7 kilowatt-hours of electricity. While gas prices exceed $3 per gallon, many EVs can be fully charged at a total price of $10-$30. Meanwhile, some PHEVs with their smaller battery packs can be recharged for under $10! Owning an EV also saves on maintenance costs. Since all-electric vehicles are completely void of a gas-powered engine, there is never a need for oil changes or spark plug changes, saving you money on maintenance. Additionally, the brake pads of all-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids last longer thanks to regenerative braking.

Get Exciting Performance

When electric power was first introduced to the automotive industry, many drivers grumbled about the lack of performance. However, as time has passed, technology has advanced, and now many of the industry’s highest-performing vehicles use some sort of electric power. This is because electric power is instantly available as the electrons are constantly flowing. While drivers of cars with an internal combustion engine must wait for RPMs to build before accessing the full power, torque is instantly available for an electric vehicle, providing exciting performance. In fact, a majority of electric vehicles accomplish a 0-60 time of six seconds or less, with some EVs going 0-60 in less than three seconds! This instant power is accessible whether the EV is at a full stop or at cruising speeds, making it easy to launch, merge on the highway, and overtake vehicles.

EV Tax Incentives

With the federal government pushing EVs, the IRS is offering owners of battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids a federal tax credit of $2,500 to $7,500, depending on the vehicle’s battery capacity. Hybrid vehicles are excluded from this, as a requirement for the tax credit is that the battery must be recharged by an external power source. Additionally, this credit is only available with the purchase of a new EV and cannot be given for used vehicles. There are oftentimes more incentives for the purchase of an EV at a state and local level. Be sure to ask one of the sales team members here at Northland Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram about any EV incentives to see how much you can save!
