Here in the Detroit area, we’re lucky enough to have a wide array of charging stations to choose from, and the same can be said for most major cities throughout the country! Keep reading down below to learn more about EV charging stations in Detroit!
Where Can I Find Public EV Charging Stations?
As we mentioned above, it’s easy to find a public EV charging station in the Detroit area! Like many major cities in the United States, Detroit is a hub for public EV charging stations, making it easy to find a station near you. Across the city, there are nearly 180 public charging stations to choose from, many of which are centrally located in Downtown Detroit. There are charging stations on both banks of the Detroit River, reaching into the North End near Highland Park, and to the east in Greenfield Village. If you’re on the go, and searching for a public EV charging station to use, it’s a safe bet to start looking for major highways. Charging stations can usually be found in downtown areas, or off the exit of a major highway.
Can I Charge My EV at Home?
Knowing where the public EV charging stations in your area are located is a great way to make sure you can always find one when you need it. However, you can also install your very own personal charging station in your own home! Home charging stations allow you to charge your EV or PHEV overnight, so you can simply plug your car in, go to bed, and wake up to a fully-charged vehicle. Plus, if you have some down-time during the day, you can leave your car charging while you accomplish other things, and you’ll be multi-tasking the whole time by letting your car charge simultaneously! Many home charging stations also offer Wi-Fi connectivity, so they can pair with your smartphone, and send you alerts about your car’s charging status, or even let you know when is the most efficient charging time in your area!
How Can I Protect My EV Battery?
Whether you drive an EV or a PHEV, all electrified vehicles feature a rechargeable battery pack, which is what powers the vehicle, and allows you to drive with reduced emissions, or zero emissions. Compared to a typical car battery, EV batteries are much larger and more robust, and require less maintenance. If you take good care of your vehicle, your battery might last anywhere from 10 to 20 years! If you’re looking to take care of your EV battery, be sure to keep your car out of extreme hot or cold temperatures if possible. You can be sure to park your car in a garage, or in a shady area in the summer, and try to clean snow off of it as soon as possible in the winter. You should also avoid driving on a very low battery, and instead, keep the charge at a minimum of 20%. Similarly, if you’re on a long road trip and charging frequently, keep the charge between 20 and 80%, and save the full charge for another time. You can charge more efficiently between 20 and 80% if you’re on the go.
What are the Benefits of Driving an EV?
There are so many great benefits to driving an EV! As you’re probably well aware, driving an EV that does not contain a gas-powered engine will allow you to drive with virtually zero emissions, which is great for the environment. Plus, the cost of electricity to charge your battery is anywhere from 3-5 times less expensive than the equivalent cost of gas. Where gas prices have been known to change drastically over the course of even a single week, electric prices are much more stable by comparison. You won’t have to worry about wildly fluctuating costs when it comes to charging your EV. Plus, if you drive an EV that doesn’t have an engine, you no longer have to worry about engine maintenance, including oil changes!
