Fall Maintenance for your Jeep

Fall has arrived, and here in Michigan, that means old man Winter is right around the corner with frigid temperatures and feet of snow. Winter can be tough on your Jeep, and before the cold weather hits, you want to take some time to make sure it’s ready. Here at Northland Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, we want our customers to be well-versed when it comes to taking care of their beloved Jeep vehicles. So keep reading below to learn the services we offer to help keep your Jeep on the road through the cold season!

Tire rotation

While preparing your vehicle for the winter months, it’s important to have your tires checked. Having low tread is a safety hazard, especially in slippery road conditions. The front tires will most often wear faster than the rears due to a majority of the vehicle’s weight being on the front axle because of the location of the engine and transmission. Giving your tires regular rotations will help prevent this premature and uneven wear. Our service technicians recommend getting a tire rotation approximately every 5,000 miles. A good way to remember this is to have your tires rotated during every oil change. Another way to take care of your tires is to check the tire pressure. Overinflated or underinflated tires can cause uneven tire wear. You can find your car’s correct tire pressure on the placard on the inside of the driver’s door jamb.

Oil change

The oil in your engine keeps your car running smoothly by lubricating all the moving parts inside your engine and protecting them from overheating. Over time, this oil can begin to break down, losing its lubricating properties. When the oil can’t provide the proper level of lubrication, your engine won’t run as smoothly as it should. Old engine oil can also get dirt, debris, and tiny metal shavings in it with is abrasive to the parts that the oil is intended to lubricate. Getting an oil change will drain the engine of all the old oil and any contaminants and replace it with new oil. Our technicians also replace the oil filter at every oil change with a brand new Mopar filter to keep contaminants out of the oil. It is also important to check the other fluids that keep your car running smoothly, such as the fluid in your transmission and differentials. The technician will check these fluids for you during a multipoint inspection.

Check the brakes

Even with all the modern safety technologies that Jeep offers, your car’s brakes are one of the most important safety features. It is important to ensure your entire braking system is ready to keep you safe all winter long, from the brake pedal to the pads and rotors and everything in between. When you bring your car in for service, our technicians will examine your car’s braking system and ensure everything is working properly. If something isn’t functioning correctly, a technician will let you know and recommend the necessary repairs.

Check the battery

The heat from the Summer months can damage the cells inside your Jeep’s battery. A service technician here at Northland CDJR will test your battery to ensure it is putting out the correct cold-cranking amps. When a car battery has low cold-cranking amps, it will be harder for the vehicle to start and can even cause it to fail. While the technician is testing the battery, they will also check the terminals for any corrosion. If the vehicle has low cold-cranking amps or corrosion, the technician will recommend the replacement of the battery and will make sure the correct battery gets put in.

Other important checks

With the winter months around the corner, checking your Jeep’s heating and the defrosting system is important. You don’t want to get into a situation where you wake up for work one frigid morning to find your heat isn’t working. Not only does your car’s heating system keep you comfortable, but it also keeps you safe. This is because of the defrosters that melt the ice from your windshield, allowing for a clear view of the road in front of you. A technician will also check your wiper blades for tears and streaking to make sure they effectively clear the windshield.
