History of the Jeep Grand Cherokee

The Grand Cherokee started in 1983 and was originally modeled to be a successor to the Cherokee. Development for the new Grand Cherokee began in 1985 by the American Motors Corporation and was created by a process known as “product life cycle management.” This process allowed the smallest American automaker to find a method that allowed engineers to enhance production speed to compete with the large competitors. The original Grand Cherokee was aided by computer design software and communications systems that resolved all conflicts faster while resolving costly engineering changes. This system proved effective, and Chrysler eventually bought the American Motors Corporation and then expanded the system so they could connect everyone involved in design and building. This officially made the Grand Cherokee the first Chrysler-badged Jeep product, and Jeep was soon eager to begin production.

The Grand Cherokee officially debuted in 1992 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. It debuted in a Poppy Red Clear Coat and came with fantastic features, such as high-back bucket seats and a quartz cloth interior. Driving it was the president of Chrysler, Robert Lutz, and Detroit Mayor, Coleman Young. The Grand Cherokee was driven from the Jefferson North Assembly Plant to Cobo Hall, making its way up the steps and going through a plate-glass window to prove that the vehicle was smashing through the glass ceiling. Shortly after this impressive introduction, production soon began. Officially the Grand Cherokee was introduced in April of 1992 and came with one powertrain. The 4.0-liter straight-six engine delivered 190 horsepower with a four-speed automatic transmission.

In 1999, the Grand Cherokee got an official redesign with the relocation of a spare tire from the side of the cargo compartment to under the floor. The two previously heavy pushrod V8 engines were replaced with the new PowerTech. The new V8 engine improved fuel economy while providing better road performance. The six-straight engine was also upgraded in 1999 with a redesigned manifold that added ten more horsepower. Another feature added in 1999 was the automatic four-wheel-drive option, “Quadra-Drive.” There were also updates to the interior, such as more space for passengers in the rear of the vehicle. The 1999 Grand Cherokee also had more convenience features such as headlights, heated seats, and rear wipers that were moved to different places. The Electric Vehicle information Center was also moved from the radio to above the windshield.

With the 2004-2005 model year came the Grand Cherokee WK, which was revealed at the 2004 New York International Auto Show and came with first-time features such as the Quadra-Drive II four-wheel drive,rear-seat DVD player, an optional 5.7 Hemi V8. Significant advances were also created to reduce noise, harshness, and vibration while keeping luxury and tech in mind. In 2008, more changes came to the Grand Cherokee with a more rounded bottom for the headlights and additional High-Intensity Discharge Headlamps with auto leveling. Also, to improve the off-road performance, the front bumper became removable to increase the approach angle. The fourth generation of Grand Cherokees was introduced in 2011 and stayed true to the classic design while adding a few improvements. These features include leather trim, real wood accents, and Bluetooth and Uconnect electronic options. A few years later, the Grand Cherokee revealed the Grand Cherokee 4xe, a hybrid version of the famed vehicle.
