Rules and Regulations for Michigan Off-Roading

Before you go out on your off-roading journey, there are a few things that you need to do. First, you must know where and when you will need a permit. The cost to get a permit is $26.25, but you will not need a permit on private lands. Both the license and trail permits will last you for one year. When you do hit the trails, be sure to make sure that you are following proper trail etiquette to keep the trails in Michigan pristine. Another thing that you should do is check for all the latest closures and detours before you head on the trails. You don’t want to go out of your way only to find the park has been closed. Finally, operators under the age of 16 in Michigan need to take an approved ORV education course.

Michigan is home to several excellent trails to take your off-road vehicle. One of these parks is the Silver Lake State Park, home to a 500-acre ORV scramble area. You can also find 2,000 acres of sand dunes, and it has been a family-friendly destination for many years. So take the family and make a day out of it at this fantastic park. Another great park to visit in Michigan is Holly Oaks ORV park, located in southeast Michigan and utilizes former and active sand and gravel mines, making it one of the most unique parks in the state. Other significant areas include Black Lake State Forest Campground, Bull Gap, and St. Helen Motorsport Area.

Before you enjoy the trails that Michigan has to offer, there are still a few more things that you need to know. For starters, there are certain restrictions for children 16 years and younger, and most of those obligations will fall to the parents and guardians, who will need to give their children direct supervision. Next, you will have a certificate of title for selling, purchasing, or transferring ownership of your off-road vehicle. If you plan on heading out for an activity or group ride, they may require a fee or donation, especially if more than 20 people are participating. Finally, when you are behind the wheel of your off-road-vehicle, be sure to take things slow as it will be key to you and your passenger’s safety.
